Ranger man Glen Kamara ‘booed with every touch’ by ‘kids under 14’ in Europa League match at Sparta Prague before being sent off

Glen Kamara was subjected to boos from Sparta Prague fans and was later sent off as Rangers fell to a 1-0 defeat in the Europa League clash.

Rangers faced Sparta’s local rivals Slavia Prague in the competition last season, however, the last-16 tie was marred by an incident where Slavia player Ondrej Kudela was found guilty of racially abusing Kamara.

The Rangers players, including Kamara, took a knee before the match on Thursday started, while the Sparta Prague players opted to stand around the centre circle.

The match was due to be played behind closed doors after a group of Sparta Prague fans were found to have subjected Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni to monkey chants during a Champions League qualifier in August.

UEFA’s ban was relaxed, allowing children to attend the match against Rangers.

However, the clash took a dark turn with Kamara reportedly being booed by the fans in the stadium every time he touched the ball.

Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell tweeted during the first half: “Sparta Prague fans racially abused Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni so faced a stadium closure tonight vs Rangers.

“The only exception is that 10,000 local kids under 14 years are in but Glen Kamara, racially abused by Slavia’s Ondrej Kudela, is now being booed with every touch.”

Kamara was booed by some of the home supporters as he picked up a yellow card late in the first half.

He picked up his second yellow after being adjudged to have fouled Michal Sacek.

Playing their first European tie under Steven Gerrard without talismanic defender Connor Goldson, Rangers attempted to make up for the loss by defending from the front.

Their high press nearly led to a chance for Fashion Sakala as Sparta tried to play out from the back, but soon after 39-year-old Alan McGregor rolled back the years with a fine flying save of Jakub Pesek.

McGregor was again called into action, denying Martin Minchev well, but eventually he was outdone with a David Hancko header from a corner looping over everyone and off the far post.

McGregor got back as the ball bounced across the face of the net, but goal line technology confirmed his efforts were enough.

Sparta began the second half with Lukas Haraslin missing an open net, and were nearly punished by an offside Sakala who had the ball in the net.

Kamara had picked up a first half yellow which he could have no complaints about, and he received his second with 15 minutes to go for a harmless arm across Sacek.

The ten men were spurred into life and had the better chances to end the match, but couldn’t make one stick despite James Tavernier easily dominating the right side of the pitch.
